What is a Doula?

A Doula’s role is one of service, not to be confused with servant.  Her voice is soft and understanding.

Her role is fluid, creating a harmony in the birth room.  She brings a calmness and reverence for life with her.  She has the ability to set the tone of the birth room in a peaceful way by intuitively knowing where she is needed.

A Doula is an advocate for birthing mothers.  The skills I have developed are medically proven to make a difference in the experience of birth.  The outcomes are improved for mother and baby.

Women supported by a doula during labor have been shown to have:

50% reduction of cesarean rate
25% shorter labor
60% reduction in epidural requests
30% reduction in analgesia use
40% reduction in forceps delivery

About Sara

I’ve been assisting women in birthing for over 20 years.  A few years ago a friend mentioned there was a name for my work   . . . and it was called a “doula”.   I investigated and discovered it was true!   In 2005 I went to school, passed all the tests and became certified with Doula’s of North America.

My Philosophy

Doula work isn’t so much what one does, it is who one is.  Few other professions are built so extensively upon emotional connection, pure intent and unconditional support.
